Las Vegas Teen Raps About Saving Money

Las Vegas Teen Raps About Saving Money

Posted April 15, 2012

The phrase "save your money" is one many teens don't want to hear until they're at least in their 20s, but awareness of money management is starting younger and younger these days.

Syretha Shirley, a Las Vegas high school sophomore, has been getting a lot of shine after winning the Money Matters Music Mogul contest, sponsored by the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the Charles Schwab Foundation. Her hit "Time Is Money" has been taking over as she raps about her bank account.

"Money, money, money, money all around. Gotta stack that money, this is how it’s going down,” she raps. The 16-year-old says the "Money Matters" course she took "taught me how to be financially responsible; it helped me to plan for my future. It taught me the difference between what I needed, and what I wanted."

The contest was held late last year to promote a teenage financial education program. Teens were asked to submit song lyrics that reflected "financial fitness." The winner would have their song produced as a music video by Kevin Cates, also known as Khao. Shirley beat out 49 entries and got her music video and a $500 scholarship grant from the foundation.

Being smart about your money pays off. Peep her "Time Is Money" video below.
