Lego Racism: Star Wars Lego Set Seen as Racist?

/ January 25, 2013

The force is clearly not with the staple building blocks of our youth.

Toy blocks Lego is coming under fire for racism in their new Star Wars’ “Jabba’s Palace” set. Offensive themes have said to be incorporated, specifically promoting negative stereotypes against the Middle East and the Turkish Cultural Community (TCC).

The TCC explains their racist claims to U.K. newspaper The Telegraph. “The terrorist Jabba the Hutt likes to smoke a hookah and have his victims killed,” the group said. “It is clear that the ugly figure of Jabba and the whole scene smacks of racial prejudice and vulgar insinuations against Asians and Orientals* as people with deceitful and criminal personalities.”

Lego also addressed the allegations of racism, issuing the following statement:

“The Lego Star Wars product Jabba’s Palace does not reflect any actually existing buildings, people, or the mentioned mosque.”
