Leona Lewis Speaks on Attack at Book Signing

Leona Lewis has opened up about her attack, while her assaulter is getting his mental health evaluated.

Leona Lewis was taken to the hospital Wednesday after an unprovoked attack from an unidentified man. The man was later identified as 29-year-old Peter Kowalczyk.

Lewis was making a book-signing appearance in London when Kowalczyk suddenly walked up to the singer and physically assaulted her by punching and slapping her before a crowd of onlookers.

“Leona was the victim of an unprovoked attack,” a rep for the singer said in a statement. “The police were called immediately and medical attention has been sought. Leona is understandably shaken and apologizes to the fans she was unable to meet and complete signings.”

Lewis, who sustained bruises on the side of her face, was captured in pictures after the incident sobbing. She was taken to the hospital immediately after the assault.

On Thursday, she thanked fans for their support.

“Thank you so much for your support it is truly overwhelming. Yesterday was a horrible shock and left me extremely hurt and upset. I’m very sorry to those I wasn’t able to meet at the signing. Thank you again for all of the lovely messages.”

Kowalczyk has been charged with assault and has since been ordered to remain in a prison area for inmates with mental health problems. He is due back in court October 26. –Linda Hobbs
