The Lost Angeles Lakers

So it’s Wednesday. The coke and fairy dust from the Los Angeles Lakers coaching chaos has finally settled. Calmer heads always prevail, but the Lake Show knows nothing about this.

They fired former head coach and the poster child for “Nice Guys Finishing Last” Mike Brown last Friday. Brown wasn’t getting the job done so the Lakers had every right to fire him, after they gave him a chance, of course. Brown was fired after five games in which the Lakers went 1-4. Someone has to be blamed and take the fall right? No. It’s called being patient before you make a hasty decision.

The 2010-2011 Miami Heat that lost in the Finals to the Dallas Mavericks were 9-8 after the first 17 games of the season. That team had Lebron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh. People were calling for head coach Erik Spoelstra to be fired. The Lakers' 1-4 start, lack of defense, but most notably their “Princeton offense” was the reason for Brown’s firing. It should be stated that at the time of Brown’s firing, the Lakers were ranked 6th in the NBA in points scored per possession. I guess Brown’s Princeton offense wasn’t that bad after all.

The Lakers lost again last night, 82 – 84 to the San Antonio Spurs, and are now 3 -5. Word on the street over the weekend was that they were going to hire Phil Jackson. They shook Phil like Iverson shook Jordan and hired Mike D’Antoni instead this past Sunday. It’s Wednesday and D’Antoni still isn’t with the team.

The NBA season is 82 games long and the Lakers are only eight games in. They’ll be fine. They’ll make a deep run in the playoffs. Their front office should have had some perspective and asked themselves if they thought a team that starts five All-Stars was not going to make a deep run in the playoffs. If they would have taken a step back and looked at the situation logically instead of emotionally, their answer would have been simple and Brown would have still been employed.

You don’t fall in love overnight. Success doesn’t happen overnight. So what makes the Lakers organization think that their new fully loaded superstar team would play like the greatest team of all time in the first five games? The only thing happening overnight is the sun coming up. Right now, the Lakers are lost, and they won’t be found until they find themselves and with anything new, that always takes time.
