Macklemore is held up by many as an example of everything that’s right about rap music in 2014, largely due to his progressive attitude towards gay rights (as evidenced by critically acclaimed hit “Same Love”). Much of that goodwill evaporated last night (May 18) when pics of the 30-year-old wearing a seemingly offensive costume surfaced online.
Twitter was quick to pounce on the “Thrift Shop” hitmaker for his transgression. Comedian Seth Rogen lead the charge, tweeting: “first you trick people into thinking you’re a rapper, now you trick them into thinking you’re Jewish?” Macklemore quickly denied that he was dressed as a caricature, claiming it was just a “random costume”.
