Beyoncé isn’t the only Knowles member who’s finally opening up to the public. In an exclusive interview with The Sun U.K., Bey’s dad/ex-manager Mathew Knowles gets emotional about their split.

The pair formally parted ways, business wise, in May 2011. Papa Knowles clarifies that it was a mutual decision, not a firing. “It was hard for me to let her go — it was hard for both of us to let each other go,” Mathew told The Sun. “And let’s be clear on that. She didn’t let me go, we both let each other go. That’s a big difference.”

Although he’s barely been spotted with Beyoncé, viewers got a glimpse of Mathew in Bey’s HBO documentary, Life Is But A Dream, holding Blue Ivy.

Confessing that he’s “never revealed this much in an interview before,” Mathew admits that (naturally) the split hurt like hell. “This was not a normal ending of a business agreement. This was a dad and a daughter and it was incredibly painful and it had some difficulties,” he said. “But I try to always have a positive mind about things.”

In Life Is But A Dream, Beyoncé unleashed closeted emotions herself, telling the cameras: “I’m feeling so very empty because of the relationship with my dad. And I’m so fragile at this point and I feel like my soul has been tarnished.”
