Max B's Murder Conviction Upheld

Max B's Murder Conviction Upheld

Posted August 31, 2012

It looks like that Coke Wave will ride on without Max B.

An appeals court has upheld the murder conviction of Harlem rapper Max B for his role in a 2006 robbery at a Fort Lee hotel which turned deadly. B, whose real name is Charly Wingate, was handed down a 75-year jail sentence and had tried to argue that the Bergen County Superior Court judge who tried his case had erred by not granting a request to separate it from that of his accomplice, Kelvin Leerdam.

The now-34-year-old rapper was convicted back in 2009 after a jury found that he had sent Leerdam, his step-brother, and his girlfriend Gina Conway to a Holiday Inn on Route 4 to rob two men, Allan Plowden and David Taylor. The robbery was botched and Leerdam ended up murdering Taylor, instantly putting to a halt the rise of the Coke Wave, which has since captured the Uptown New York rap scene. Max B's sing/rap style is the blueprint from which artists like French Montana, Jim Jones and Wiz Khalifa use to make those hits with support from his peers almost a given. The love for all things "wavy" has been so strong within the Hip-Hop community that even Jay-Z shouts out the Harlemite on Rick Ross's "3 Kings" track.

With Max's murder conviction upheld, Biggaveli will not be eligible for parole from Trenton State Prison, where he currently resides in until November 9, 2042.
