M.I.A. has been known to shock fans, but this time around, her antics might come at a cost.
The British singer/rapper recently made headlines when she flipped the bird during her Super Bowl halftime performance alongside Madonna and Nicki Minaj.
As a result, M.I.A. will be expected to pay any fines directed at NBC should the FCC decide to sue for the artist’s gesture. According to TMZ’s sources, M.I.A. initially signed a contract with the NFL that stated the singer would compensate for any potential fines or FCC expenses incurred.
This contract was drawn up after Janet Jackson’s super infamous Super Bowl “wardrobe malfunction” left CBS with a $550,000 fine. (The fine was later thrown out by a federal appeals court.)
Both NBC and NFL addressed the middle-finger-incident by apologizing to the press yesterday. NFL Spokesman Brian McCarthy claims M.I.A.’s obscene gesture was her own improvisation, as it was not practiced during dress rehearsal.
