Tragedy hit New York City Wednesday (March 13) after a mother plunged eight stories to her death outside of her apartment window while clutching her baby son.
West Harlem resident Cynthia Wachenheim allegedly committed suicide while clutching her 10-month-old son Keston. She was found lifeless on the pavement while Keston wailed outside of his mother's grip.
Fellow apartment resident Steven Dominguez saw the 45-year-old Columbia University law student fall with the infant clutched in her arms.
“I was shocked. I couldn’t believe it,” the 18-year-old told the Associated Press.
Police also discovered a seven-page suicide letter under a bed in Wachenheim's apartment. She reportedly wrote the note to her husband, saying “she recognized what she was about to do was ‘evil’ but she was concerned about how her child was developing.” However, neighbors said they were unaware of any mental or physical problems baby Keston had.
The baby is in critical but stable condition at Harlem Hospital.
