When a fresh-faced teen rapper namedrops a hip-hop elderstatesman over his own beat, it’s usually a fruitless plea for attention. But for Diggy Simmons, who gave Nas a shout on his “Made You Look (Flow Stoopid)” freestyle, he actually gained the legend’s awe and amazement.
“I couldn’t believe it,” Nas told VIBE of first hearing Diggy Simmons dismantle his “Made You Look” instrumental. “[Rev.] Run is the king of rap, and for him to have a son who’s that nice? You don’t even think shit like that happens.”
The 15-year-old rapper with Run DMC woven in his DNA has been raising the eyebrows of rap heads and labels alike, after tearing through Drake’s “Over” instrumental and the aforementioned Salaam Remi-produced Esco beat. He signed to Atlantic Records in March, and is slated to appear on Donnis’ upcoming mixtape.
“I don’t think we’ve seen that in hip-hop yet—he’s nice and his father’s the king? That’s historic, bro. That shit is incredible. That little dude is nice.”
Nas is set to release his Africa-themed collaborative album with Damian Marley, Distant Relatives, on May 18. —John Kennedy
