NBC correspondent Richard Engel is missing in Syria, out of contact with his network since Thursday. However, the news only broke Monday, per NBC's request for a news blackout. Engel, NBC's Middle East Bureau Chief, was working with Turkish reporter Aziz Akyavas, who is also missing.
While US media kept silent about the disappearance, Turkish news stories and Twitter chatter amongst Engel's colleagues brought it to the attention of Gawker.com, who first reported the story Monday night. The media "blackout" is a standard procedure that prevents news outlets from publicly documenting when a writer goes missing. Sometimes reporting the disappearance can jeopardize a reporter's safe homecoming.
We hope that Mr. Engel makes a secure and swift return to the states.
