Ne-Yo Gives Advice To First-Time Nominees

Ne-Yo Gives Advice To First-Time Nominees

Iyana Robertson Posted February 8, 2013

Ne-Yo has one thing to say to first-time Grammy nominees: you already won.

In an interview with V103, the three-time Grammy winner advised the newbies to remember that a nomination is an accomplishment in itself.

“You need to understand that only one person is going to walk away with the GRAMMY and the fact that you got that recognition above all these other artists that didn’t, understand that is your victory,” he said. “A lot of people don’t take the nomination as I feel they should […] You gotta look at your victories for what they are.”

Frank Ocean is among the first-time Grammy nominees. Ne-Yo endorsed the young artist's contribution to R&B, and wished him well on winning the biggest honor in music.

"I applaud him for making music good enough to open peoples’ eyes to the genre that is on life support. As far as his nomination, I hope he does get something," he said. "I’m a fan of Frank Ocean stuff. I feel his take on R&B is fresh. It has an element of tradition, an element of the old, but there is definitely some nuance in there. I never heard an R&B artist's reference Dragonball Z.”

Ne-Yo himself has received yet another nod from the Recording Academy. His single "Let's Go" is nominated for Best Dance Recording.
