Despite the unfortunate passing of his father last week, New Jersey Mayor Cory Booker has a new reason to smile. Today (Wednesday), he was elected to the U.S. Senate, making the rising Democratic star New Jersey's first ever African American senator.
Booker beat out Republican Steve Lonegan for the spot, which became vacant when long-serving Democratic senator Frank Lautenberg died in June. Booker will also become the chamber's second African American member along with Republican Sen. Tim Scott. Congrats Senator Booker!
