The early 90's saw it's share of hits and misses. Cross Colors, Boom Boxes, Door Knocker earrings and the infamous 8-Ball jacket.
Many nostalgic artists have attempted to recreate the post-new-jack-swing era with retro fitted outfits, jacked funk beats and the bouncy swagger that came with it, all with mild if not unsustainable success.Enter rookie singer/soul-writer Elle Varner to defy those odds. For her debut single and video, "Only Wanna Give It To You", Varner has bounced on to the scene with some of the most refreshing soul sounds the game has seen since that era.
"She has a super soulful voice and brings a new perspective on real life issues with a fresh energy" says Cole who recently collaborated with the 22 year old superstar-in-the-making on her new single. "The game needs Elle Varner right now and the lane is wide open for her." He added. Recalling the first time he heard "Only Wanna Give It, "My first thought was, WOW, this is a smash, it was so clear. I was honored that they wanted me to be a part of it."
With help from producers Pop & Oak and a complimentary verse from artist of the moment, J. Cole, this throw-back single has an infectious hook that will stay in in your head for days. This head-bobbin track is fueled by the songstress's own lyrics. Her melodic voice I'll describe as "playfully seductive" transcends from her out-going spirit and vibrant personality.
The video, directed by Orson Whales, is a spill canvas of colors. "We really dug into the 90's for this one. The colors and fashions really brought out the fun." Varner told us from the set of 106 & Park where her video will premiere tonight. Along with crimped hair and fresh-prince-esque suitors, the attention to detail and heritage comes thru as very well manicured. Oh, and did I mention the YELLOW JEEP?!
The song, which Elle penned, is "half infatuation, half imagination", she admitted to us, just short of confirming it was about a man she was crushing on. We are co-signing Elle as one to watch. --Robbie Sokolowsky.
