Nicki Minaj Says 'American Idol' "Inspired" Her To Join

Nicki Minaj joining as a judge for the latest season of American Idol may have been a curve ball to some, but she claims that the show has always been an inspiration to her.

MTV News sat down with the entire judge panel, and Nicki opened up about what made her join the team.

Nicki says in the press conference, "I remember watching 'American Idol' in the first season and feeling inspired. I spoke to [season 6 winner] Jordin Sparks the other day, and here she is starring in a movie [Sparkle] and I said to her, 'I remember watching you and picking up my phone."

She continues by adding, "I told her [Sparks] that, 'you know you're a part of history, kind of. Because I remember calling and seeing your face and being inspired and hearing your story."
