Nicki Minaj Talks Trayvon Martin, 'Roman Reloaded,' Working With Nas, Love for Foxy & Remy Ma
Although Nicki Minaj stopped by Hot 97 to promote her new highly anticipated album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded
, Minaj unrobed her Roman alter ego and spoke candidly to Funkmaster Flex about political culture, pop culture, and anything in between.
Last night, Funkmaster Flex took a moment to open the interview on a somber and socially relevant note, asking Nicki to share her thoughts on the media-heavy Trayvon Martin case. And like her outspoken celebrity colleagues, Nicki didn’t hold back.
“If that man was black, they’d bring back the electric chair for him,” she said of shooter George Zimmerman. Nicki then adds sensitively, “It’s heart wrenching to know some mother is home crying her eyes out, someone’s whole family has to bury a child for absolutely nothing.”
The interview then quickly returned to the objective at hand: her album, and particularly working with venerated rapper Nas on her track “Champion.”
“I asked Nas on a Friday, he sent me his verse on a Monday and I was like the most honored.” Said Nicki. “I keep saying to be from Queens and to end up having him….we know how picky he is (for features). He said ‘I like the song, I’m a do it, you can wait ’til Monday and I got you’ and he kept his word. He murked it, for me to wait for a feature and it be that and murk the song and finish the song that way…I was amazed.”
Nicki then threw out a few names—Lauryn Hill, Remy Ma, Foxy Brown--to shower her respects for female emcees that have proceeded her. But there was no way Nicki could have avoided talking about the M.I.A. Superbowl scandal and the surprising birthday kiss from Madonna.
Nicki keeps to the story that no one, not even Madonna, knew M.I.A would flip the bird, and as for the smooch she got from Madonna, she couldn’t anticipate that either.
“She just came out of nowhere with it. It took a few minutes, probably even when I went home that night it didn’t register to me.” But then she adds, “Her lips were so soft, soft and juicy. It felt good.” --Tanya Chen

On Trayvon Martin: "It's heart wrenching to know some mother is home crying her eyes out, someone's whole family has to bury a child for absoloutely nothing. And I up until just a few mintues ago thought that the murderer was convicted and I just found out he wasn't even charged."

On her love for Remy Ma and Foxy Brown: "Remy at one time brought back this energy that was almost palpable. When the ‘Ante Up’ verse came out, if you ain’t know her, you knew her then.” “She was one of my faves. I had connected with her a lot just because she’s Trini and I’m Trini, and I always thought if I meet her, she would understand me. Foxy Brown was my friend in my head.”
