On the night before Christmas, Chiara de Blasio -- daughter of New York City Mayor-Elect Bill de Blasio -- released a video revealing her long term struggles with depression and substance abuse.
"I've had clinical depression for my entire adolescence," the 19-year-old shared in her YouTube video. "So that's always been something that I've dealt with. Or not known how to deal with."
Drugs initially provided a way to share common ground with others who felt the way she did, but then things got a little out of control, affecting her school and social life. She also shared that checking into an outpatient treatment center helped her, praised her family's efforts to help her and left a message to others who may feel the way she once did.
"It's important to realize," she began, "that if you're suffering and if you're depressed or dealing with mental illness, and you think it might have something to do with your drug abuse, drinking or if you're suffering from both of those at the same time and you think they're unrelated to one another, that getting sober is always a positive thing. By no means is it easy. It's the hardest thing I've ever done, but it's so worth it."
