The Olympic family is in shock after gold medalist, Andrew “Bart” Simpson, 36, died in a tagic sailboat accident.

Simpson was aboard a 72-foot-long Swedish sailboat which capsized this past Thursday (May.9) in the San Francisco Bay. The Atermis racing team was practicing for the upcoming America’s Cup races when the boast capsized. Simpson was an Olympic gold medalist from the United Kingdom.

“The entire Artemis team is devastated by what happened,” CEO Paul Canyard said in a statement posted on the team’s website. “Our heartfelt condolences are with Andrew’s wife and family.”

Other sailors suffered minor injuries, which included 13 other members. The Swedish-based team was practicing to defend its 2010 America’s Cup title.

This is the second time a sailor has died during training for the America’s Cup.
