Oscar Nominee Quvenzhané Wallis Eyed For ‘Annie’ Remake

Following the announcement that Willow Smith is no longer starring in the Annie remake, nine-year-old Quvenzhané Wallis is looking like an obvious choice to replace her.

Besides the fact that the Beasts of the Southern Wild star is officially the youngest person ever nominated for an Academy Award, her in-your-face pluckiness and unbridled spirit are two attributes that Wallis is perfectly capable of showing off in front of the cameras.

Reports are now circulating (via Entertainment Weekly) that Wallis is actually being considered to join the production, which is now actively moving forward once more. Will Gluck (Easy A, Friends with Benefits) has stepped up to direct the movie musical that will also feature original music from Jay-Z.

EW’s sources are keen to stress that the Hollywood handlers working behind the scenes “have yet to make any casting decisions.” However, Wallis easily qualifies as a smart decision / front-runner to star in the picture, if for no other reason than her performance as Hushpuppy in Beasts left such a strong impression on so many who saw the film.

Annie is currently undergoing script revisions, as Gluck revamps previous drafts from Oscar-winning actress/screenwriter Emma Thompson (Beautiful Creatures). Filming is expected to begin this fall, ahead of a late 2014 theatrical release.
