Some people just aren’t original.
Rapper Eminem’s music publishing group, Eight Mile Style LLC filed a lawsuit yesterday against foreign car retailer Audi
for using the artist’s song in their new commercial. The company used the rapper’s number one song Lose Yourself to promote the release of its Audi A6 Avant which was revealed in a Berlin press conference last week.
Upon the ad’s release earlier this week, Eight Mile Style LLC filed a cease and desist order to Audi AG and will proceed to seek further damages of the unauthorized use of the song through the Hamburg Regional Court for copyright infringement.
The ad also brought about more controversy between Audi AG and rival company Chrysler for the its similarity to a Chrysler campaign, which was aired during the Super Bowl earlier this year, promoting the Chrysler 200. Both ads used the same song.
A rep for Eight Mile Style LLC spoke out on the similarity: "We believe Audi not only used 'Lose Yourself' to sell their product without permission, but their spot actually feels inspired by elements of Chrysler's commercial campaign.”
Though Eight Mile Style LLC is only suing Audi for the unauthorized use of the song, it is believed that Chrysler may file a separate lawsuit against Audi AG for the ad’s similarities. Chrysler Representative, Gualberto Ranieri commented on Audi’s controversy surrounding this ad: "Apparently someone believes that the definition of copyright laws is the right to copy others' materials, including world-renowned successes created by Chrysler,"
