"My manager just happened to "forget" to tell me that I was on immediately after that other dude called Avicii!" ~ Morten
With the forthcoming release of his new single "Look Closer," rising dance DJ Morten (aka Morten Breum) chats with VIBE to discuss his breakout track, roots in Scandinavia and working with PRMD Music label founder Ash Pournouri. Get a first listen to his new single below and follow the jump to read the full interview.
VIBE: Tell us about "Look Closer." Where did you produce the track? What was the inspiration behind it?
Morten: We started production while I was visiting back home (Copenhagen) last summer and we finished the track in L.A. where I have been living for the last two-and-a-half years. The initial inspiration for "Look Closer" came from Paul Aiden's incredible vocals. I really wanted the track to have a positive, upbeat vibe which is what I hope comes across when you listen to it.
Scandinavia is on top in the world of electronic music. What do you think is unique about the Scandinavian brand of house? Who are some other Scandinavian artists we should be on the lookout for, particularly from Denmark?
Yes, Scandinavia is very hot at the moment; Sweden in particular. They have a long and proud history of making great music. The Swedes are all about producing hits, whereas the Danes are more underground. Other Danish artists to look out for are Tomas Barfod from Who Made Who and Lulu Rouge. Not only are they great producers and DJ's, but they are also amazing people. They have an incredible energy - really inspiring.
Your new release is out on PRMD. How did you get linked up with Ash? What's that relationship like?
My manager, Nima Kay, is my link to Ash. Two years ago, Ash was kind enough to invite us to his 30th birthday party in Stockholm and asked me to spin. My manager just happened to "forget" to tell me that I was on immediately after that other dude called Avicii! So I went on and the floor was empty after Tim had murdered all the guests! Quite an experience! I like Ash a lot and have a great deal of respect for his work and achievements in the music business. But what we like most about him is his personality. For us, that’s always the most important trait.
Denmark is often considered one of the happiest places on earth, according to multiple studies. Would you agree? Do you think this influences the sound coming out of Denmark?
I would say that the people in Denmark are generally happy. There is a good welfare model which makes everyone feel safe and secure. However, that security can stifle motivation and creativity. Also, the long winters and gloomy weather conditions add a darker side to some of the music coming out of Denmark.
What's coming up next for you? Where can we catch you live over the summer?
Well during the next month, I will be spinning at Tomorrowland in Belgium, Golden Cut in Hamburg and at Avicii’s Ibiza residency at Ushuaia. Then I’m off to India and in the meantime we are working on US tour starting in September. On Aug 8 am heading to New York for the official release party of my single “Look Closer” at LAVO.
What's to come after that?
It's hard to say at this point; we have a lot of things in the works and offers are popping up on a daily basis. In the meantime, we’ll continue to work hard and take things as they come.
