Heartache never sounded this good. Meet Son Little, the artist formerly known as Aaron Livingston, whose soulful vocals circle the drains of despair but offer the perfect self-medication for today’s sorrows.

In the dark and somber visual for “Your Love Will Blow Me Away When My Heart Aches”, the Anti Records signee describes the chest-pounding record as, “You can file the song under Wu-Tang sea shanty with the Beatles on background vocals.”

Name-dropping the Beatles and Wu-Tang in one sentence may be ballsy but his vocal offerings do blend the hard-hitting bars of a veteran rap star juxtaposed with folky, blues on a great day.

“The songwriting process is always a blur to me. When I look back I usually can’t remember how I did,” he tells VIBE of his creative process. “But usually I start with rhythm or guitar. This song was different because I started the vocals and arranged everything around those. So the song kind of sang itself into existence.”

While the inspiration behind the emo ballad came from a pirate song that was wedged into Son Little’s head, he says its meaning is basically about a “man overboard.”

“I guess it’s about being in over your head,” he says, “being afraid to feel what you’re already feeling.”
