Ray J had everyone buzzing this weekend with the release of his new single “I Hit It First.” The song’s title and lyrics suggest the singer is throwing subliminal shots at his ex-girlfriend Kim Kardashian, as well as her subsequent relationships thereafter, including her current boyfriend Kanye West. This morning, Ray J called into Hot 97 to deny any negative intentions with the new song, claiming that everyone has taken the song too seriously.

“It’s a song, it’s not about that, it’s about a concept. People going way too deep,” he said. “They just gotta keep it on the surface. I’m not trying to create no war, it’s all love; we’re doing music.”

Ray J and Kim Kardashian were the subject of controversy in 2008 when their private sex tape went public. The lyrics in “I Hit It First” seemingly reference Kim K. with lines like “She might move on to rappers and ball players, but we all know I hit it first,” which may allude to her trysts with Reggie Bush and Kanye West in the following years. Hosts Cipha Sounds, Peter Rosenberg and K. Foxx grilled the singer on why he released the song now, and on whether or not he was still in love with Kardashian.

“People digging way too deep. It’s just a song, we’re just having fun,” he responded. “We no on that situation, we just doing music. It’s not like that, take it away from that and bring it to the song, you know what I’m saying.”
