The world mourned the death of actor Robin Williams, who was found dead in his California home. The Sheriff’s office reveals that the 63-year-old actor committed suicide by hanging himself, according to The Associated Press.

The beloved actor, who lit up the screen in movies such as Mrs. Doubtfire, Jumanji, Dead Poets Society, Good Will Hunting and voiced such famous characters as The Genie in Aladdin, was discovered by his personal assistant on Monday (Aug. 12). Superficial cuts were found on his wrist, with a pocketknife spotted nearby.

Initial reports said that Williams’ cause of death was suicide due to asphyxia. His rep said that he had suffered severe depression for years and struggled through bouts of substance abuse. According to coroner’s officials, Williams was last seen alive at his home around 10pm on Sunday.

His wife, Susan Schneider, released this statement on Monday, saying, “This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one if its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken. On behalf of Robin’s family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is our hope that the focus will not be on Robin’s death but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions.”
