In honor of Bobby Womack’s musical legacy, rock ‘n’ roll legends The Rolling Stones paid tribute to the legendary soul singer who passed away on Friday (June 27) at the age of 70.

The group posted a letter on their official website that read, “Bobby Womack was a huge influence on us. He was a true pioneer of soul and R&B, whose voice and songwriting touched millions. On stage, his presence was formidable. His talents put him up there with the greats. We will remember him, first and foremost, as a friend.”

In 1964, the Stones gained national attention by performing a cover of Womack’s song “It’s All Over Now.” The song sat atop the Billboard charts, and was also their first number one hit.
