A ‘rogue dentist’ may have exposed up to 7,000 patients to HIV and hepatitis thanks to poor sterilization and hygiene.

The Tulsa-based ‘rogue dentist’ is Dr. Wayne Harrington, an oral surgeon whose shoddy sterilization practices have drawn a state dental board investigation and intervention from the Tulsa Health department and FDA. One of Harrington’s patients tested positive for HIV and hepatitis C, which prompted a surprise inspection of Harrington’s practice by the Oklahoma Board of Dentistry.

Once there, the Board found rusty instruments and unsafe practices, such as pouring bleach on open wounds until they “turned white.” The office also failed to keep an inventory of drugs, and had expired medications that were not locked away. It gets even scarier – the ‘rogue dentist’ apparently reused hypodermic needles, barely paid attention to sterilization, and seriously endangered patients that came through his office.

Those potentially infected will be contacted by the Tulsa Health Department, and will be eligible for free testing.
