Russian crime boss Aslan Usoyan, seen to most as the highest-ranking mafia boss in the country, has been shot dead by a sniper in Moscow.
According to Global Post, the 75-year-old mafia king—often called "Grandpa Hassan"—was shot in broad daylight, after surviving two previous assassination attempts.
Usoyan was leaving Karetny Dvor restaurant about a mile from the Kremlin, when he was hit by a single shot. He was reportedly rushed to the hospital by his bodyguards, but died while in transit.
Usoyan had recently become a target in a war between criminal clans.
Police say both previous assassination attempts, in 2010 and 2013, were "connected and have apparently been prepared by the same people."
Agence France Press reports fears that Usoyan's murder would unleash a turf war in the criminal worlds of Russia and former Soviet republics.
We wonder how this crime war will affect the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
