Members of Russia’s gay community are protesting a planned law banning “gay propaganda” by kissing each other.

Russia’s Parliament is considering a federal law that makes public events and dissemination of information on the LGBT community to minors punishable by fines of up to $16,000, Fox News reports.

Militant Orthodox activists have reportedly attacked members of the Russian gay after a dozen LGBT campaigners began smooching in protest in front of the parliament building Tuesday. A group of young men began to shout obscenities at them and destroy their posters.

While the country has decriminalized homosexuality in 1993, homophobia still lingers strongly.
