The 2012 BET Awards are just around the corner and, this year, the network says it will be “too big to miss.”

In a press conference Tuesday, BET announced veteran actor Samuel L. Jackson as the show’s host and revealed Chris Brown and Nicki Minaj as the first confirmed performers.

Kanye West leads the pack with seven nominations that include Video Director of the Year, Video of the Year and others. Beyonce follows with six nominations (Best Female R&B Artist, Video of the Year) and husband Jay-Z falls in line with five nominations (Best Group, Best Collaboration).

During the conference Stephen G. Hill, BET’s President of Music Programming and Specials, confirmed a Whitney Houston tribute that will surpass all other tributes.

Maze featuring Frankie Beverly will also be honored with the Cadillac Lifetime Achievement Award.

The 2012 BET Awards will air live from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on Sunday, July 1 at 8P/7c on BET.
