It looks like Justin Bieber’s manager and the director of G.I. Joe: Retaliation are combining their talents to mind some more ’80s childhood fun in the form of Jem and the Holograms. What’s next?!

Along with Paranormal Activity producer Jason Blum, the trio of Hollywood mainstays are planning to create a live action version of the classic cartoon for a next-generation audience. Announced on YouTube, the guys emphasized over and over again that this wasn’t a joke — we repeat this is not a joke!

Scooter Braun and the fellas all insist that they are enthusiastically looking to make an updated version of the ‘toon, and they want to tap into the internet to find the next big star… on Tumblr.

Yes, you read that right, the triple threat filmmaking group want to cast their whole movie through Tumblr. If you head over to JemTheMovie.com, they’ve already created a website announcing the “truly outrageous” project, and are urging fans to suggest casting using the hashtag #JemTheMovie. They can even submit themselves for the project, or a star like, say, Nicki Minaj.

The Christy Marx created animated show went in conjunction with a line of toys which was launched by Hasbro, and probably explains why Chu is on board. The plot involved a regular girl named Jerica who used hologram technology to become the worldwide music superstar named Jem. Alongside her band, they fought the forces of the evil girl band known as The Misfits in order to protect a super-computer named Synergy.

Sounds like the guys have a blockbuster on their hands.
