Sean Garrett’s Top Ten Songs Of All Time
When it comes to great music, singer/songwriter/producer Sean Garrett‘s ears are golden. The 31-year-old maestro has crafted a wealth of hits for artists such as: Ciara, Beyonce, Mario, Chris Brown, Usher, and most recently Nicki Minaj. Before he gets ready to drop his the Gil Green-directed music video for “Get It All” featuring Nicki, Drake, and Lil Wayne, VIBE caught up with The Pen to hear his top ten songs of all time. Don’t hate on the self-picks!
1. Usher ft. Lil Jon & Ludacris – “Yeah”
Of my time this was probably one of the biggest records. It was very notable, like when you hear it in the club or you hear it on the radio, everyone’s excited. That record was a blessing and everytime somebody hears that record they smile and say ‘Oh shit.’ My whole purpose in life is to make people dance and make people happy.
2. Michael Jackson – “Rock With You”
That’s just an emotional, good time, music lover song. That’s the one song that I fell in love with as a kid. That’s a record my mom used to play all the time, just the feeling of that song is amazing. It’s just like butter.
3. Jay-Z – “Hard Knock Life”
Hov named me The Pen. My other peers don’t matter to me, I don’t give a fuck what any of them says, but when Hov names you The Pen… I’m good (laughs). I feel like that record is so relatable, it’s something you can always go back to when times is hard and you were eating ketchup sandwhiches. If you’re from that place, I’m so thankful to be where I am now, but I just love that song. Such a bangingass record, whenever you hear that just takes you back.
4. Notorious B.I.G – “One More Chance”
Biggie is one of my favorite rappers of all time, he was so inspirational. He didn’t look like everybody else, he was so unorthodox, but at the same time he was so fly. That’s one of the sexiest records. That bounce and then you got a flyass Brooklyn kid from the street. And of course the sample comes from Debarge. That record just has a lot of classic elements. That’s great music.
5. Chris Brown – “Aint No Way”
That’s a nice boy-meets-girl record I did. Love that record.
6. DeBarge – “Time Will Reveal”
I’m telling you my mom used to play me all these crazy, classic-ass records. That record is fucking retarded. I love beautiful emotions, I love life, I love positivity, love serenity and peace – this record gives me all of that.
7. Mario ft. Sean Garrett & Gucci Mane – “Break Up”
I love “Break Up” because everybody didn’t like it at first. People thought it was strange, but it wasn’t. As a music maker, you’re always trying to outdue yourself, you gotta get people that pill they need in their life. You got the critics who were like ‘We don’t really know about that,’ but the fans always stand up. That was the song of the summer and was the breaking of me as an artist.
8. Bobbi Brown – “Rock Wit’ Cha”
That Don’t Be Cruel album is probably one of the hottest albums of all time. That album is just pure feelings.
9. Michael Jackson – “Thriller”
Who doesn’t have this on their list? I think Quincy would kill me if I didn’t include.
10. Dr. Dre ft. Snoop Dogg – “Dre Day”
When you talk about greatest, he’s one of the most incredible producers of all time. Record is phenomenal, so gotta give a shoutout to Dre.
