Should Rap Lyrics Be Used As Evidence In The Courtroom?

/ January 21, 2014

The New Jersey Supreme Court is to decide whether or not rap lyrics should be used as evidence in the courtroom this month. The case comes to light after the attempted murder conviction of Vonte Skinner, who is accused killing a rival drug dealer based on the violent rap lyrics he’d written. Thirteen pages worth of lyrics were read to the jury as evidence and later ruled “highly prejudicial,” resulting in Skinner to get a new trial. But the case opens up the question whether or not rap lyrics, used to creatively express oneself, could also be someone’s own worst enemy.
