Ski Beatz Talks 'Twilight' Album and Status of Curren$y, Jay Electronica, Mos Def Supergroup

Ski Beatz Talks 'Twilight' Album and Status of Curren$y, Jay Electronica, Mos Def Supergroup

Posted February 29, 2012

During Ski Beatz' press day for his new album, 24 Hour Karate School Presents: Twilight, VIBE.com spoke with the veteran producer on the new project. We also discussed some of his other work including his project with Freddie Gibbs, the next Karate School album, the Center Edge Territory group (Curren$y, Mos Def, and Jay Electronica), and more.

On whether or not he took a different approach for the third Karate School album:

Yeah. I wanted to take a different approach. I wanted this one to be more laid back, more smooth. This album is full of live music, as all the other albums are. But this one just has a nice, cool, organic, laid-back smooth vibe. This is an album made for cats chilling in the crib with your girl, or girl with your dude, with some wine. Whatever you drink, whatever you smoke and just chill out and listen.

On artists wanting to collaborate after the Karate School releases:

It was definitely a lot of new students that wanted to get down that still want to get down but we’ve got so much stuff going on. It’s going to take me a minute. But eventually were going to do a ‘Karate School: White Belt’ edition where I’m jus going to bring on all new artists, give them a shot and see what it sounds like.

On Ski's next projects:

The next thing is going to be Freddie Gibbs, I’m working on his project right now. We got a couple of other cool things coming out, just cant disclose it right now. But as soon as I know it’s official then I’m going to start letting people know.

On new artists he wants to work with:

I’m feeling Danny Brown. I like his style. I want to do an album with him. It’d be interesting to see what type of music I can make for him because his style is so unorthodox. I like his creativity.

On the Center Edge Territory group with Currensy, Jay Electronica, and Mos Def:

I don’t know if the Center Edge territory is going to happen. But the combination came across because of all the cats being in the dojo at the same time. I was working with Currensy at the time. Mos Def was always around. Jay Electronica would come through a lot. They just kind of sat down and said they wanted to do a group. But now with all the political stuff going on, it may be kind of hard to do that. I know Jay Electronica is in London. Mos Def is Mos Def. Currensy’s all over the place.

On what’s next with Dame Dash: Dame is masterminding all kind of stuff. He’s trying to do so much stuff I can’t even begin to tell you what we’re trying to do, just big stuff. If Dame is behind it’s going to be not what you expect to happen. It’s going to be totally left, but its most likely going to work.
