Wesley Snipes, star of films including “White Men Can’t Jump” and the “Blade” series, took his seat at a federal prison in Pennsylvania today to begin a three-year sentence for three misdemeanor tax convictions.

According to the Department of Justice, Snipes was given a three-year sentence in 2008 after a court in Ocala, Fla., found that he had willfully failed to file tax returns for 1999 to 2004, a period in which he earned more than $38 million. An appeal by the actor, in which he asked for a change of venue to New York from Florida and said he should have been considered for probation, was denied in July. Traci Billingsley, the chief public information officer for the Bureau of Prisons, said that Mr. Snipes surrendered before noon at Federal Correctional Institution – McKean, a medium-security site in northwest Pennsylvania with a satellite minimum-security prison.
