Iyana Robertson / July 24, 2014

Side chicks are a regular topic of discussion on social networks, just search the hashtag on Instagram or Twitter for proof. In an effort to delve into the term and its popularity on the Web, we called upon vlogger/author Jouelzy. With a social media reach of nearly 200K, the YouTube personality serves as the voice of the #SmartBrownGirl, tackling topics of beauty, social issues and the like.

To place a microscope on such a large issue, we’ve narrowed our lense to two notorious side chicks: Kerry Washington’s fictional presidential side chick Olivia Pope, and Stevie J’s “wife” Joseline Hernandez. During their times slots on ABC and VH1, social media is abuzz about Scandal and Love & Hip-Hop’s notorious other women. Now, Jouelzy offers her take on the images they portray, theie effects on the image of Black women and “dropping it low and spreading it wide” for another woman’s man in general.
