Solange Knowles made a Wednesday appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show to explain why she chopped her crop.
"Realistically I was spending about $40,000-$50,000 [on hair]" the 23-year-old singer confessed. "A year and probably half of my life, I grew up in a hair salon, my mum owned a hair salon."
Knowles appearance was part of an episode surrounding Chris Rock's highly anticipated, upcoming documentary Good Hair. The film explores black women's obsession with their hair and tackles the controversial notion of "good hair" vs. "bad hair."
"There was always this feeling of always wanting to be in the salon once or twice a week and I got a perm pretty early - I was four," says Knowles, whose mother Tina owned and operated a hair salon when Solange and her older sister Beyonce were kids.
The artistically savvy performer cut her hair off earlier this year, and wrote about it on Twitter. She then criticized Twitter-users for turning the event into a trending topic.
"This phase in my life I want to spend the time the energy and the money on something else and not in the hair salon," she told Oprah. --Linda Hobbs
