Stevie Wonder Apologizes for Frank Ocean, Gay Confusion Comments

Stevie Wonder Apologizes for Frank Ocean, Gay Confusion Comments

Charley Rogulewski Posted September 1, 2012

Where to begin?

Stevie Wonder, the guy who penned the Grammy-winning and hit love songs "You are the Sunshine of My Life," "I Just Called To Say I Love You" and "Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm Yours," is catching some heat for comments he made on the subject of Frank Ocean's recent coming out of the closet.

When the 62-year-old soul legend was asked by The Guardian if he was surprised that Ocean's recent admission caused the massive public outburst and media attention it did, Wonder replied by saying he thought Ocean might be bewildered.

"I think honestly, some people who think they're gay, they're confused," Wonder told the UK publication. "People can misconstrue closeness for love. People can feel connected, they bond. I'm not saying all [gay people are confused]. Some people have a desire to be with the same sex. But that's them."

This past July, Ocean infamously released a lengthy note via his website expressing his sexuality. In two paragraphs originally intended to be the linear notes for his forthcoming debut, Channel Orange, Ocean described how he unexpectedly fell in love with another man.

Wonder is a fan of Ocean's music. As noted in the Guardian article, when Wonder met Ocean recently, he sang the hook from Ocean's "No Church In The Wild" to the rising R&B star. Since the article was published, Wonder has attempted to clarify his comments. In an exclusive statement to The Advocate, Wonder said he was misunderstood and reiterated that love is universal.

Wonder's full apology reads: "I’m sorry that my words about anyone feeling confused about their love were misunderstood. No one has been a greater advocate for the power of love in this world than I; both in my life and in my music. Clearly, love is love, between a man and a woman, a woman and a man, a woman and a woman and a man and a man. What I’m not confused about is the world needing much more love, no hate, no prejudice, no bigotry and more unity, peace and understanding. Period."

So, does this mean we might see a Frank Ocean and Stevie Wonder duet someday? Probably not.
