J. Cole was all smiles at the 2013 BET Awards. With a fat new gold Cuban link chain hanging from his neck, the NC native caught up with VIBE to discuss the impact of Nas' remix to his heartfelt track, "Let Nas Down."
Cole says the moment they created is one that sits close to his heart. Though he knew about the record prior to its surprise release—the response he received was overwhelming to say the least.
"That was an amazing feeling, man," J. Cole tells VIBE. "You got to understand how much I used to listen to Nas and [I] still do. He felt that it was important enough to respond. And to create a moment, like people [were] calling me like ‘When I heard Nas’ part I cried.'
Cole continues: In hip-hop there’s not a lot of love. There’s not a lot of love being spread. It’s always like 'I’m stuntin’ on you raps, or I’m better than you raps'. It’s not a lot of 'Yo man, I idolize you raps.’
His newly released sophomore album, Born Sinner, pushed 296,000 units after its first week of sales and is looking like it will have a strong second week as well. The Roc Nation rapper tells VIBE he's gearing up to shoot a video for "Crooked Smile" (feat. TLC) and possibly "Forbidden Fruit." He also confirmed "She Knows" as single somewhere down the line.
