VIBE Salutes Geronimo Pratt, Former Black Panther Leader
Elmer G. Pratt, otherwise known as Geronimo Pratt, passed away Thursday in Tanzania. Stuart Halon, Pratt’s former lawyer confirmed the passing of the former Minister of Defense for the Black Panther Party to the media the earlier today, citing his information from Pratt’s family. The cause of death wasn’t specified by Halon, but it is believed that he died from a heart attack due to high-blood pressure, which Pratt struggled with.
Pratt, who was also the late Tupac Shakur’s Godfather, made news headlines a couple of years ago when he was freed from jail, after serving 27 years for a crime he did not commit. He also won a 4.5 million dollar settlement with the FBI and the city of Los Angeles for the false imprisonment.
Halon spoke very highly of Pratt and regarded the optimistic outlook the revolutionary leader had though he was falsely accused and imprisoned: “He had no anger, he had no bitterness, he had no desire for revenge. He wanted to resume his life and have children. He would never look back.”
