VIBE Style File: Full Figured Fashion Week
New York experienced the best of the plus size industry last week.Bloomingdale’s showcased models strutting down the runway wearing the latest designs by Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, and Michael Kors — but they weren’t the typical stick-thin variety who frequent the catwalks of the global fashion weeks in New York, Paris, London, and Milan. reflecting the figures of every day women, the runway shined limelight on the beauty of shapes and curves.
The runway show, which was part of Full Figured Fashion Week, showcased styles for a segment of the population that the pages of Vogue and other fashion magazines often overlook: those size 12 and up. More than 62 percent of American women are overweight, according to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, and the average woman wears a size 14 — yet most high-end designers like Prada and Louis Vuitton rarely go beyond a size 10, even though the plus-size clothing market was worth $17 billion last year.
