Washington Height’s Dyckman Park has been bringing together this New York City neighborhood since 1990 with their annual summerlong Dyckman Basketball Tournament. Fifty-two teams in four different age groups take to the outdoor basketball court in one of the biggest streetball competitions in the world. DJ Ted Smooth has been the official beatsmith for the tournament for the past three years. He’s been putting his own twist on the hard court by playing in the middle of the action and making the ballgame into one large party.

“Before they had the DJ in the corner, and I’m like “What is that dude doing in the corner?’ You can’t see the game!”

Here DJ Ted Smooth talks about how he is changing the streetball game one scratch at a time.
