Aug./Sept. VIBE cover girl Azealia Banks released the visuals for the title-track off her '1991' EP over Labor Day weekend.
"NEW VIDEO: "1991" … HAPPY SUNDAY! :D," Banks tweeted Sunday, along with a YouTube link. "Check me out! i'm rocking the new #YUNGRAPUNXEL lipstick from @MACcosmetics In my New video for "1991"!"
Plugging her lipstick in the video for the Machinedrum-produced track is a smart marketing move. Last month, Banks revealed she was teaming with the cosmetics line for a limited edition, dark purple lip color, called YungRapunxel. The video, directed by Justin Mitchell, is simple and sexy, recalling Madonna's 1990 "Vogue" visuals at times with close-ups of Banks who dons a blazer and pant suit. Even the rapper admitted she was "channelling Madonna, Crystal Waters, and Aaliyah" in a follow-up tweet.
The 4-track '1991' EP was released this past spring, and Banks' full length debut is in the works. "I definitely need to sing more, for sure," Banks told VIBE recently. "I'm working on that -- just being a nice girl and writing a ballad instead of all these hardcore ass raps. It's coming."
