Mary J. Blige takes on a career-defining role in the newest Lifetime original drama "Betty & Corretta" alongside Academy Award winner Angela Bassett.
In a behind-the-scenes clip, Blige and Bassett play the tandem of Coretta Scott King and Dr. Betty Shabazz as they fight for equality and justice during the Civil Rights movement, and exceed their titles as wives to Black history's most notable figures. They learn the power of strength as they forge on as single mothers dealing with the assassination of their husbands.
"The friendship rose out of tragic circumstances," says Bassett. "Betty and Coretta were known for being the wives but they were women of strength."
Grammy-winning songbird Blige looked to her personal relationships to identify with the character. "There were things that helped me get into that mindset. I used my friendships to understand what Betty and Coretta had," explains Blige. "I believe the story at its core is just women being there for each other."
