Before there was YouTube, there was Napster, a website that allowed music lovers to download music freely without having to purchase an actual CD. Music libraries began to increase overnight, shining a lot of negative attention on Napster developer Shawn Fanning and co-founder Sean Parker.
VIBE sat down with filmmaker Alex Winter, who directed Downloaded, the documentary that explores the success and ideas of the website that took the music industry by storm. With interviews from both the developer and founder of Napster and music artists, Downloaded shows just how a company completely changed the music industry.
"To me it was absolutely worth all of the trouble along the way," says Fanning. "I think the technology itself is pretty powerful and people have shown that they love it and I think it'll always exist regardless of how it evolves and changes."
