In the single most beautiful moment
ever of the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards, Jay Z and Blue Ivy presented Beyonce with the year’s Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. Humbly dubbing his wife as the “greatest living entertainer,” Mr. Carter bestowed the network’s highest honor upon Mrs. Carter, with their daughter in tow.
After planting a kiss on her husband, Beyonce kept her acceptance speech brief as the crowd chanted and she held back tears.
“I’m so full, thank you. I have nothing to say but that I’m filled with so much gratitude and I just thank God for this moment,” she said. “I love y’all so much. Blue Blue, I love you. My beloved, I love you. My fans, I love you. MTV, I love you. Goodnight.”
Just moments before her lifetime achievement award coronation, Beyonce delivered a performance of the bulk of her self-titled album. Opening with a sans-Drake rendition of “Mine,” the (non-human?) singer transitioned into a slew of fresh choreography and mixes of her surprise 14-track offering. Notable alterations included a beat-change on “Angel” that featured a dance solo from the phenomenal Les Twins, a leg-sy liquid bodysuit addition to “Drunk In Love,” her sexy “Partition” shadowdance to the tune of “Rocket,” and the dropping of her stinging elevator line from her “Flawless” remix.
Bey ended her cardio-defying mini-concert on an emotional note, tearfully belting out the ode to her and Jay Z’s daughter, “Blue” before dedicating “XO” to her fans. Jay and Blue’s presentation seemingly came as a shock, as she covered her face with a towel when they approached. Blue Ivy even managed to adorably congratulate her mother with a “Go mommy.”
And just like that, your heartstrings are not safe.
