Those who are coming to this post completely fresh are advised to be aware of spoilers.

Spike Lee’s remake of Oldboy has wrapped and the red-band trailer for the disturbing remake is out online now. The clip suggests that Lee has taken notes from Park Chan-wook’s 2003 original, but we’ll let you decide when you press play on the clip below.

The trailer lays out the basic premise of the story — a man named Joe Doucett (Josh Brolin), an advertising executive, is abducted and held in captivity for 20 years, until one day he’s mysteriously freed and sets out to learn the identity of his captor and the reason for his imprisonment, forging uneasy alliances and wielding a hammer to exact bloody revenge.

Movie fans have been anticipating an American-made version of Oldboy for awhile now. Written by I Am Legend and Thor screenwriter Mark Protosevich, Lee’s version aims to be just as startling and gut-punchy as Chan-wook’s cult oddity. What Spike manages to do is craft a new, bold version of the revenge mystery, and makes great strides in terms of tone and imagery.

Elizabeth Olsen, Sharlto Copley and Samuel L. Jackson co-star in Oldboy, which opens Oct. 25.
