12 Years a Slave has made itself known as a bonafide hit, as witnessed at the Telluride Film Festival over the Labor Day weekend. Now, Yahoo! Movies urges interested movie fans to take a look at the truly unique story of Solomon Northup through the eyes of actor Chiwetel Ejiofor.

One of the reasons Steve McQueen’s slave picture works so well is that it is rather intriguingly constructed as a thriller. In 12 Years a Slave, the film follows Solomon Northup (Ejiofor) from his life as a free man in Saratoga, N.Y., to a man duped into shackles and slavery. After being kidnapped in Washington, D.C., and sold into captivity in the Jim Crow fueled South, Northup’s experiences are just terrifying, and director Steve McQueen captures each horrifying happenstance in grizzly detail.

As the picture makes it way up North to the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday, it will certainly raise the interest level to dizzying heights.

A new featurette from Yahoo! Movie details the journey, outlines the stakes and profiles characters Edwin Epps (Michael Fassbender), Judge Turner (Bryan Batt) and more. You can check it out for yourself below:

Paul Dano, Quvenzhané Wallis, Paul Giamatti, Brad Pitt, Alfre Woodard, Michael Kenneth Williams, and Scoot McNairy star alongside this stellar cast, as 12 Years a Slave will impact audiences here in the U.S. on October 18.
