Marvel is going galactic with their next film, but exactly how does Benicio Del Toro fit into the play?
Marvel Studios and director James Gunn are bringing in all the talent they can muster to cast for Guardians of the Galaxy, and with Benicio Del Toro added into the mix, which roles these stars will play is becoming harder to sort out.
It still hasn't been confirmed whether Del Toro will play a hero or a villain in the space adventure starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Lee Pace, but one site is claiming to have confirmed information on his role. The actor did sign to appear in multiple Marvel movies, so whoever Del Toro plays could have stellar repercussions for the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole.
Comic Book Movie is reporting from a "very reliable source" that Del Toro will play the part of Taneleer Tivan, also known as The Collector. A long time character in the main Marvel universe, The Collector has been rumored to make his appearance on film for quite some time. Initial reports named Ophelia Lovibond's casting as The Collector's aide. Interestingly enough, The Collector's storyline connects him to Thanos, whom many glimpsed after the end-credits of The Avengers. Joss Whedon and Kevin Feige both have previously hinted that Thanos could be the big bad wolf of their Phase Three initiative, so The Collector could conceivably fit into that larger plot arc.
For now, Del Toro's character, while unannounced, is "built to be part of future Marvel films."
Aside from Benicio Del Toro's talents, Guardians of the Galaxy will also feature Karen Gillan and Michael Rooker as villains; Glenn Close and John C. Reilly as leaders of Nova Corp; and Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, respectively. The film opens August 1, 2014.
