/ November 25, 2013

Yale University has officially been put on lockdown after reports of a gunman around campus have surface.

From USA Today:

Yale University ordered students and staff to “shelter in place” Monday following a report of a person with a gun on or near the Old Campus, according to the university’s website.

The report of a gunman came in an anonymous call placed from a phone booth in the 300 block of Columbus Ave. in New Haven, Conn., the New Haven Independent reports.

Police scanners indicate that officers are looking for an “older white man, balding, in a heavy overcoat, walking toward” Linsley-Chittenden Hall, the newspaper reports.

The newspaper said a SWAT team had been sent to the downtown Old Campus area, where several streets were blocked off.

The university’s initial announcement issued at 10:17 a.m. ET said: “Confirmed report of a person with gun on/near Old Campus. Shelter in place. This is NOT a test.”

Although the university referred to a “confirmed report,” authorities, at this point, say there have been no confirmations or sightings of the person.

The announcement was also made through the Yale PA system, the New Haven Register reports.

Many students have already left campus for the Thanksgiving holiday.
