Frank Ocean

Posted July 17, 2012
Date of Birth:
Wednesday, October 28, 1987
Birth Location:
New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans born, Christopher Francis Ocean, Frank Ocean has been making music longer than most people know. After losing his studio to Hurricane Katrina, Frank Ocean packed up what was left of his belongings and took his talents to Los Angeles. There he started his musical journey as a ghostwriter for major artists such as Brandy, Beyoncé, Justin Bieber, and John Legend and linked up with Odd Future, individuals who he felt could push him into the right direction, especially underground sensation Tyler the Creator.

In 2010 after some inspiration from the original Ocean’s 11, he changed his name legally to Christopher Frank Williams Ocean. And the next year, in 2011, Frank Ocean released his mixtape Nostalgia Ultra, with famous single ‘Novacane’, which led to his collaboration with Kanye West and Jay Z on their album Watch the Throne. However despite all his ackelades he’s received since coming to the scene, 2012 will probably go down as his most known year in music.

On July 4, 2012; days before his debut studio album Channel Orange was set to be released, Frank Ocean answered the question around his sexuality in a heartfelt letter about his first true love on his blog on twitter. In the letter he reveals that he was bisexual as well on tracks Pink Matter, Forrest Gump, and Bad Religion off of Channel Orange he refers to his sex orientation. Artist such as Beyoncé, Jay Z, Jamie Foxx, and 50 cent have since supported his decision to come out and despite Targets refusal to sell Channel Orange, this album is a hit and is doing well on the charts.
